Three Fur Seals in Gorge

Saturday evening I spotted three fur seals in the Cataract Gorge in Launceston.

These were youngsters, because these seals can become 200kg giants that look more like walruses than seals. Christmas last year one of their bigger relatives ended up on a car in one of the suburbs, presumably because they like the reflection of heat from the engine as much as the natural heat absorption of rocks.

This must have taken them a quite a journey, swimming at least 60 kilometres through a meandering Tamar River, as the nearest ocean is at Georgetown, where the Tamar runs into Bass Strait.
